Afflictiou is the wholesoine soil of virtue, where patience, honor, sweet humanity, ealm fortitude, take root and strongly flourish. Lore is like a painter, who, in drawing tlie portrait of a friend baving a blemish ia one eye, would pictnre only the other side of the face. A man who habitually indulges in violent rage is laying up for himself a store of ills against advancing age, the least of which may be a general palsy. The very consciousness of trying for real excellence in anything is a great support. It takes half the sting from failure and doublos the joy of success. Every one must have feit that a cheerful friend is like a sunny day, whicn sheds its brightnesson all arouud; and most of us can, as we choose, niake this world either a palace or a prison. Be yourself. Ape no greatness. Be wining to pass for wliat you are. A good farthing is better than a bad sovereign. Affect no oddness, but daré to be right though you have to bo siugular.
