New Yoük, July 5.- The 114th anniversary of John Hancock' s bold and famous signature was celehrated in the usual style of metropolitan holidays. Tammany had a grand celebration yesterday which was participated in by prominent politicians from all parts of the country. A large delegation of Congressmen came over from Washington to attend the love-feast. Letters were read from ex-I'resident Cleveland, Governor Hill and others. Portland, Me., July 5. - The city of Portland gave a celebration Friday in honor of tho Army of the Potomac. There was a grand military and civio parade, fire-works, salutes from the naval vessels in the harbor and a firemen's parade, to which several other cities contributed. The parade was reviewed at Lincoln Park by General Sherman, Hannibal Hamlin, General Devens, General Porter, General Collins, Admiral Cherardi, General Butler and others. Chattanoooa, Teiyi., July 5.- The city was decked with the stars and stripes Friday in honor of the convention of the Union-Confederate Veterans' Association. The following officers were elected: General-in-Chief, General John B. Gordon; Lieutenant-General, E. Kirby Smith, of Tennessee; Lieutenant-General Trans-Mississippi Department, General VV. L. L. Cabell, of Texas. Chicago, July 5. - Patriotism painted its hues on the north wind Friday. Hosts of flags wove their stripes in the gale and made the air a streaming banner. All day long the invisible foes of the ReDublic were bombarded with an infinite variety of flre-works. Noises enough filled the air to frighten away the evil spirits for a hundred years. The vigils of the night were kept awake by the incessant fusillade. The day was spent in going to picnics and all business was suspended. Jolikt, 111., July 5.- The Fourth of July was celebrated at Joliet prison in an original manner. At 7 o'clock Warden Berggren marshaled his force of 1,400 in line and marched to the east side, where the order was given to break ranks. The men uttered a cheer and rushed into each other's arma, yelling to each other: "Helio, Bill!" "Helio, Bill!" "How long you got?" "When did you get settled?" etc. It was an animated scene, and an observer might have noticed the anarchist Neebe rushing wildly about, when order was givon to break ranks, in search of his felJows, Fielden and Schwab. Wlien he did find them the greeting was cordial. There were other noted convicts who came to the front and attempted to find their fellows, among wbom were such men as Burke, Coughlin and O'Sullivan, the Cronin murderers. Piiiladki.piua, July 5. - Irish patriotism was at high tide in Rising Sun Park, the scène of the Irish-American military encampment. From early morning until taps were sounded at 11:30 at night the grounds were filled vvith people, no fewer than 12.000 being within the inclosure in the afternoon. Boston, July 5. - Thore were elabórate celebrations of the National holiday here in the shape of picnics, games and entertainments. Band concerts and fire-works were f urnished by the city. Indianapolis, Ind., July 5. - The Indiana Commandery of the Loyal Legión celebrated the Fourth with exercises at Tabernacle Church. General Lew VVallace presided. Captain George R. Peck, of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe RailroadCompany, delivered the oration of the day. Fort Madison, Ia., July 5. - Fort Madison had a triple celcbration - a Fourth of July oelebration, the seventh annual reunión of the Lee County Soldiers' Association and the twentieth annual reunión of the Lee County Pioneers' and Old Settlers' Association. The day was bright and cool, and the lowest estimate puts the number of visitor at 20,000. Colorado Sprixgs, Col., July 5. - One of the most novel exhibitions ever devised for colebrating the Fourth of July was put in execution Friday evening. Two barrels of kerosene and one of red fire were taken up to the summit of Pike's Peak, together with a large supply of rockets and other fireworks. At 8:30 a bon -fire was built of the oil and powder and the peak is brilliantly illuminated. The mountain had the appearance of an erormous volcano vomiting forth an immense column of fire. Rockets shootiner in all directions added to the effect. The illumination could bo seen for 100 miles in all directions. Sai.t Laks City, U. T.. July 5.- The celebra tion here was the biggest in the history of Zion. The parade was over three miles long. Mii.w.ukki:, July ". - The Fourth was quietly observed in this city. At least 50,000 peoplo frora the city spent the day at suburban resorts. Washixoton', July 5. - The Fourth of July wa;i celebrated here in the usual old-fashioned way. The department buildings and public offices were all closed and business in the city was quite generally suspended. The Capitol was deserted, many Congressmen having gone out of town. For the first time tho National colors floated in honor of Independence Day over the dome of the Capitol. Moiütisvii.i.K, Vt., July 5.- The lOOth anniversary of the settlement of this town was celebrated Friday. MuNTREA.L, Can., July 5. - It was not forgotten here Friday that this was th American National holiday and there was a noticeable increaso in the amount of bunting displayed as compared with other years. Flags were flying from all places of business whose proprietors or partners ure American, and the streets presentad al most as gay an appearance as on a Canadian huliday.
