Chicago, Oct 13.- A lamp exploded in the fourth Hoor hallway of the Putnam Europoan Hotel at 163 and 165 Adiiiiis street Sunday morning at ü o'cloek. The ignitod oil was thrown in every direction, and immediately the frail pine partitions separating tbe apartments were in a blaze. The flre spread rapidly, and within a few moments the building was filled with dense smoke, blinding and suffocating. Ten persons were sleeping on the fourtb Hoor. Some escaped down the stairway, others groped their way to the flre-escape at the front of the building. Edward Peyton, aged 60 years, was burned to dcath in his bed. lilrk II. Salms, of Calumet, Mich., a Pinkerton detective, and Thomas B. Dowler, of this city, feil in the hall way and were burned almost beyond recognitioli. Mrs. Charles Uobinson leaped fiom the fourth-story window and was horribly mangled on the pavement below. Shè has since died.
