New York, Nov. 1.- The steamshlp Vizcaya, of the Spanish-American line, collided with the four-masted schooner Cornelius Hargraves ThursJay evenlng when siz miles off Barnegat, and both vessels sank almost immediately. It is supposed tbat over sixty people have been lost The steamer Humboldt whlch arrived in Brooklyn Friday morning from Brazil, resoued eight'of the crew, the first and second offleers, the engineer and surgeon of the Vizcaya. öo far as is known at present these are the only persons out of a total crew and passenger list of eighty-six of the Vizcaya and the crew of the schooner that have been saved. lt is feared that all the others have been lost.' There were others on board, however, who are not entered on the passenger lisk At 8:30 Thursday evening a larpe fourmasted schooner hovo in sight. She was a n-.uch larger vessel than the Vizcaya and immediately bore down upon her. Her bowsprit struck the steamship on tbe starboard bunkers, carrying away the bridge and the cabin. The captain of tho Vizcaya, who was standing on tlio bridgo, was instan tly killed. Seven minutos later both vessels had sunk, and the passengers and crews wero strugling in the water. There were heartrending shrieks and cries, which were heard by the people on board the Humboldt Boats were lowered and twelve persons were picked up. Tbe cries were hushed, and not anotber soul could be seen. After waitii.g aome time the Humbc'dt steamed away. A negro was picked up by a small boat afterward. He belonged to the Vizcaya. Followinsj is a list of the passendere: Juan Pedro, M. A. Calvo, wife, son and maid, Mr. Purr and three children, Mr. A. Ruiz, Joso Acaibia, Ramón Alvarez, Juan F. Hedman, Osear lslaur, Ligui Pellion, José Ma García. lt is said that Señor Calvo, who perished with hi3 wife and on, wa9 a partner In the firm of F ranche & Co., of Havana, the largest and richest sugar house In Cuba. The Vizcaya's cargo was valued at 8150,000. The vessel was insured.
