The other day, just aa the dusky shades of night were beginning to gather, a young lady, hurrying along, was accosted by a very small boy who askedifshewasnot afraid. Thequestion was patronizing, but the manner ïndioated that the fear was in the httle questioner's own breast. " No, why ahould I be afraid?" was the reply. Geo. Herriot, a Saline butcher, is ordinarily a virtuous and respectable man, but when he goes to Ypsilanti he invariably falls a prey to the seductions of that wicked place. Last Friday he journeyed thither with $150. What happened to him is thus related in the Ypsilantian: "He blew so much into the saloons that his load became too heavy, and some of his associates relieved him of the most of his wealth, including his gold watch. He was picked up in a confused condition, late at night, with only $30 and his watch chain in his pockets. George has great fun when he gets started, but he is sad afterward." Owing to a lack of more entertaining topics, the Ypsilantian thus discourses on the weather : " This fall's weather beats the oldest inhabitant. Every morning, or thereabout, the sun comes up brilliantly and smiles upon a glistening earth, and the earth smiles back and rubs her hands in glee. Every afternoon, or thereabout, chilly clouds come up from the west, the east, the north and the south, and half way between or thereabout, and drizzle the most dismal rain and snow and sleet, and all lhat sort of thing, until the earth and its inhabitants are truly miserable, while the faithless sun keeps out of sight and remembers his promise no more until the next morning." Another effect of our street railway will be, that it will enable Ypsilanti men to hold county offices without :mposing on them the necessity of residïng in Ann Arbor. Some, indeed, have held office without removing to that place, but more have gone. For example, Wm. tí. Martin, elected register, left Ypsilanti. C. H. VanCleve, went there on being elected judge of probate. Mr. Whitman's removal was directly or indirectly the result of his being prosecuting attorney, and his removal was followed by Judge Joslin's. Thus it is easily seen that Ann Arbor has had a pull' on tras city, as tne county seat, which the railway will destroy, for all reason for removal will be destroyed, when hourly communication at a moderate cost is Becured. - Sentinel. People will continue to prefer living under the shadow of the university. G. L. Hoyt, of Lodi, makes no pretense of being a trapper, but he did make a haul last night that no old veteran at the business could excel. Hawks had been carrying off some of his fine Plymouth Rock chickens, in which he takes just pride, and Mr. H. concluded to enter a protest; consequently he set two traps about what the hawk had left of a ch:cken at a previous meal, thinking he would stand a Chance of getting the thief in at least one of the traps, but was greatly surpri8ed,upon investigating this morning, to find that hehad caught two- -one in each trap. They were fine specimens, and A. B. VanDuzer will mount them ; one will adorn Nichols Bros.' window, while the other will assume a perch at the poultry farm office, as a warning to similar evil-doers who mav come that way in search of winning chickens.
