Charles Thayer, who was in his day a very prominent citizen of Ann Arbcr, died on Sunday morning last. lie was nearly eighty-nine years oíd. His life was eventful. He carne with his father, Xathan Thayer, to this city in Jun, 1825, and soon afterwards engaged in the farming business. He became postmaster of Anti Arbor, upon the death of Anson Brown, which occurred n 1834. After giving up that office he worked at . various kinds of business. At one time he was freight agent for the new railroad; at another, he carried on a raercantile business; at still anotlier, he engaged in the tanning industry. Along in 1831 and 18'Ï2 he won considerable distinction as captain of tho "Frontier Guards" - a military company organizad for protection against the Indians. He donatod one fourth the land comprising the Uniyersitv campus. He held, at various times, cily and county offices, the dutics of which he discharjred with great fidelity. In character and ability he stood high. ile waf, as his old friend, J. W. Maynard, savs, a "nice" man. In religión he was a Ünlversalist, although he attended the services of the Presbyterian church. In politics he was a democrat, although he became a staunch greenbacker during the years when peopledemanded an incontrovertible currency. He was a splen.'iü specimen of thatsturdy manhood which is best developed by the hardships of pioneer life.
