Professor Kellerman, of the Kansas State Agricultural college, in a report issued by the state board of agriculture, sugg' besttreatment at present known for stinking smut the Jensen hot water treatment. This consists in immersingthe seed which is supposed to be infected with sinút for a few minutes in Kcalding water. The teinpeiature must be such as to kill the smnt Bpores and the inmersión must not be prolouged 80 that the heat would injure the germ or ?mbryo concealed within the seed coats. If the watí r i s ut a temperature of VÖ2 degs. F., Ü. _ 'pores wiH be killed, and yet the immer::-;., if not continued beyond fifteen minutes, will not in the least injure the seed. The smut spons will possiblybe killed by ten minutes' imniersion. A fifteen minute immersion, however, is recommended. The temperaiure nmst be allowed to vary but little from 132 degs. ; in no case rising higher than 135 degs., nor falling below I uO degs.
