H By temperance do we mean simply abstinence from liquor, or will wo show ourselves Christian Temperance people, advocating temporáneo in all things, and as true followers of O rist exert all our energiea to crnsh out in temperance in every forra? One kind ofintemperance leads to aiiother. The first act of intemperaneeinay tothe c irelessobserver ver Sfcem harmless, but when at the end he looks back over a debauched and ruineri Ufe, will he say, "My first step downward was the time I first got drunk?" No, he will point tothe time be first smoked, tbetimebe first deeecrated the Sabbath, or cjniniitted ?otne sin of wbich those who pro fess Ch rist aie frequently guilty. In the Record of Chrietian Work we find the following questions on the subject of Sabbath desecration, which may help someone to ask hirnself,"Am ing the tirst stsp aownward, or sin I a stuinbling block in the way of sinnere? How do you spend Sunday? Do you commenee a journey on that day? Or, if the trip is a long one, do you start on Saturday evening? It is moreCtiristianity weneedin the temperance caus?; when we have that inteoiperance will not long curse our land. We need a revival of religión: more love to God and more love for 01 r fellowmen: but as Dr. Cuyler lus wisely said, 'The only revival worth 8triving for in congregation orcomunity is a revival of the religión whichspe'aks the tnith and keeps its promise, which is as good during the week as on the Sabbatb. which sweetens the home and purifies trade and politics frora roguery and rottenness, wliich puts a Bible-t:onscience into every-day life and which consecrates to the Lord Jesua Christ the 'first fruit' of heart and brain and time and purse and influence. As Professor Drummond weüremarks, it is not a larger quantity, but a better quality of religiouscharaclerthat is most needed." From Kansas women comes the following grand and glorious resolutions, as reponed in Unioii Signal: "Inconsequente of the letter received, threatening the lives of the leaders ol the W. C. T. U. in Kansas, and declariug that any chureli orothe. public building in which we are allowed to hold our meetings should be blown up by dynamite, as 500 brave (?) men had banded togelher to forever put a stop to our work and influence, the Lawrence union therefore passed the following ringing resolutions, showing the "mettle" of those to be 'annihilated': in view of these facts we resolve to work assiduously, until there is not one store left under any brewery, distillery, saloon, package house . or joint in ihe United States, and when this is accomplished we purpose to look beyond the seas for new fields of conquest."
