S17 Fires 899 Explosions 665 Total 5,438 Mines 3S6 The whole Hst of casualtics in the Old World where the loss of life was large enough to be reported by telejraph, including those who perished by disease and in battle, was 90,080, as compared with 90,380 last year, 60,107 in 1888, 187,950 in 1887, 118,023 in 1886, and 881,845 in 1885. PISEASE8. The nuraber of deaths by pestilence last year was 17,600. This year they reach 49,90:2, occasioned mostly by cholera in Asa, Russia. Spain, Egypt and Japan. The year, however, has been a healthy one as compared with deaths of 162,670 in 1887, 100,300 in 1886, and 101,000 in 1885. ■ hatti.es. There have been no gTeat wars during the year and yet the loss-of-life record reaches 13,789, as compared with 40,276 last year. The most of these were killed in the wars in Dahomey, Senegol, Formosa and Massowah, and in the revolutions in Brazil, Peru, Buenos Ayres and San Salvador. KAILROAD DISASTERS. The loss of life by railroad disasters shows an increase over last year, the total nuraber of killed being 3,420, as compared with 3,438 in 1SS9, 1,554 in 1888, 1,822 in .1887, 855 in 18S6, and 947 in 1885. The number of seriously injured is also increased, being 2,740, as compared with 2,120 in 1889, 1,894 in 1888, 1,999 in 1887, 800 in 1SS0, and 936 in 1885. MARINE DISASTERS. So far as reported 4,768 lives have been lost on the ocean and 240 on the lakes and rivera of this country, a total of 5,015, as compared with 2,000 last year BUSINESS FAILURES. There were 10,907 business failures in the United States during the year 1890, against 9,882 in, 1889. The total liabilities were $189,000,000, against 8148,000,000 in 18S9. WORK OF JL'DOK LYNCH. Judge Lynch has executed during the year 126 victims, a decrease ovar last year as compared with 179 in 1889, 144 in 188S, 123 in 1887, 138 in 1886, and 181 in 1885.
