Senator Gorman, Of Maryland

Arthnr Pues Gorman, United States senator f rom Maryland, was born in that state March 11, 1839. His catión was r ereived in the public schools. Early in Ufe he became a sena te page, and advanced step by step tul he became collector of internal revenue for the fifth district of Maryland. Grant removed him in 1869. In 1872 he became president of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal company. In 1869 he was choeen to the Maryland legialature, was eleeted to the Btate senate in 1875, and in 1880 wassent to the United States senate. In I88The was re-elected to that high offiee.
