New York, May 2.- A great section of southern New Jersey lias been made desolate by íire, and nnlesa rain comes soon tlie pino and ccdar forests are likely to be wiped out The cranberry boga have been ruined in many places. The fire has been the most disastrous in many years. In many of the villages within the afflic-ted district it is difficnlt to breathe, so thick is the smoke. So far as is known no lives have been lost, but there aro unconíirmed rumors that the Ilebrew colony in Cumberland county has been destroyed. The flre extends from Point Pleasant to the southern extremity of the state. Many towns were only saved from destruction by the great efforts of the residents. Galloway and Oeeanvüle, in , Atlantic county, were scorched, and Port Republic was nearly burned out. Xear Oceanville thirteen buildings were destroyed. while at Port Republic two schoolhouses and other Btnicturea were burned. At Absecon the pcoplo. had to rush from their houses at daylight. Many liouses were burned. Dktboit, Mich., May 4. - Fires broke out in the forest back of Harrison, Clare county. Tuesday, and sinee Uien have been spreading in all directions. Latest reports indícate that the euunties of Osceola. Clare, Gladwin. Uiiseommon, Alcona, Ogemaw, Oscoda and Iosco are ablaze. Fire Friday reached Cora Bros.' milis at Harrisville, where it consumed .10,000 worth of logs. It also lapped over Clave county to Penasa, where the sehoolhouse and three barn%were burned. Erie. Pa., May 4.- The forest lires are raging with great severity along the line of the Fhiladelphia & Erie railroad. and it is almobt impossible for the trairynen to endure the suffocating sraokc in some parts of the mountain passe& Baltimork, Mcl., May 4.- A special dispatch to the Sun froia Oakland, Md. . says: Foreat Bres ;n'.' raffing in almost ereryo direction, amt elouda of smoke ascend trom wn-v mountain and hilltop of (larrett county. Kew Vokk. May 5.- The forest fires in the May's and Pleasantville (N. .7.) districts have been quenched by rain. The losses in timl and berries are very heavy.
