Walked Two Hundred Miles
A pitiful case of deetitution carne to the notice of the authorities on Saturday last. It was that of a family, coasistiDg of father, mother and two cbil. dren, who were passing through the city on their way to Cleveland. They had left a farm in North Dakota and were absolutely without money. Two hundred miles ttiey had made on foot, and in Iowa they had laid two of their children beneath the sod. The father was an old yeteran - an Andersonville prisoner, and the mother a sweet-faced woman of about thirty. They called on Mayor Doty and asked permission to solicit charity on the streets - an act which showed clearly enough that they were not professional beggars. They were turned over to the superintendent of the poor and provided with funds eufficient to speed them on their journey. It was the familiar story of disappointed hopes in the west and a sad return to the old home in the east.
