Only two showers had fallen for nine weeks in the vast area south of San Antoni for 200 miles and west 400 miles. Cotton bulbs had begun to drop from the stem. The corn erop was ruined and the cattle rang-es parehed. Appalling destitution prevailed for two weeks past along the Rio Grand from Presido to Cameron sounty. In Hidalgo and Starr counties many cattle died from want of grass, and those counties are now destitute on account of three aunual droughts.
