It was the most severe experienced sinoo the terrible catastrophe of is,v. and must beclassed as a national oalamity. The greatest rlamage to buildings and loss of life Occurred in the perfectures of Achy and (ifymin, in which nearly 4,0(M) people wen; killed and wounded. In tiiosc prefecturas 42,000 houaea werc totally destroyod. The nuuiber of provinos thronhout which the disturbances ïvere strongly feit was thirty-one. The center seems to have been in Mino aod Owari. but even as far tontfa as Higo and Rikushu in the north tho db.tnrbance was f-rnsibly feit. The destruction of 40,000 bonses mrans 200,000 people have been rendered homelesa 'p to November 5 the earthquakes btill continued to be telt with intervals letveen them: gradu&Uy the intensity of the shocks diminished. From the commencoment of the disturliance up to thatdate it is es-timated 6,600 shocks or moro than otie every two minutes were feit.
