Dr. Ryan, pastor of the Methodist church at Ypsilanti, criticised the ladies who took part in the minstrel entertainment given by young ladies of that city last week. He said in his sermón on last Sunday : "I want to see how many in this congregation didn't attend the negro min strels this week. The papers said that the best people of the city were there and I want to see those present who did not attend." As was natural to be supposed quite anumberarose although throughout the audience could be seen many who remained in their seats. "Now," he continued, "I want to see how many there are who did attend and f eel sorry f or it. ' ' Not a person arose from his seat, as was also natural to be supposed. "Miss 's name appears among those who participated," said the doctor. "She has since come to me and said that she did not understand the conditions when she consented to appear and that she is sorry for it and has promised to do so no more. So she continúes to sing God's praise. If yoil did attend and are not sorry for it I am sorry for you. Mark what I say, this churoh is not going to do business that way. The Methodist ehurch has not thrown down its bars entirely yet. We cannot do God 's work and permit such things to go unnoticed. I teil you Goq is visiting this world. You who attended go home and think it over and if you are satisfied with yourself como to me. If the other eongregations stand as wu do I thank the Lord. I don'l know hovv they stand. I don 't criticisq outsiders of the church who go to suci places. It is not my place to do so. I only hope that they will soon be in the fold. Ihe Methodist church is not going to be governed by the Washtenaw Times or any other paper. It is governed by the Bible. There has been a report about my going to turn certain persons out of the church on account of the minstrels. I could do no such thing. I would rather go to the penitentiary as an innocent man for the balance of my life, however, than be turned out of the Methodist church. I am glad that no chureh of the city will accept the pro ceeds of the show. Thank God for that. I also learn that the preceeds will be devoted to a dance. Thank God for that. That is where thev belong."
