The policemaa had been standing1 on the corner íor about ten minutes, and a looking boy sitting on a near-by doorstep was watching him. The boy's curiosity overéame him at last, and he sidled aïong up to ;he ofiBcer. D "I say, Mr. Copper," he said at a safe distance, "what are you standing on this corner for?" "That'8 my business," he replied, ourtly. "Yell, you seem to be 'tendln' to it, " ventured the boy. "That's what I'm paid for." "Alle samee," chirruped the ltd, "I know wh.it you're standing there for." 'Til give you a nickel if you'U tkll me," bantered the officer as he held a coin out to the kid. "Throw it to me," said the boj, keeping1 his distance, warily. "Not much. You teil me what I'm standing here for and I'U give it to you. " The boy carne up close enough to reach the coin. "You're standin' here fer ten minutes," he said, with a grab at the money, and the offlcer chased him in vain.
