r&e crime of being a bachelor is to De , unished condignly iu several states, among them Illinoi?, where there is a probability of the passage of a bilí to tax these unmarried scorners of social Iaw. The enactment of such a law vvould be injury enough without adding to it the insult of a ranking clause that with the tax fund au old maiüs nome hall be establlshed. This is a savage j blow- a blow below the belt, so to peak- at single blessedness, and could ïardly have been inspired by any father of twins. In view of the proposed ; version of the tax to the benefit of j elderly unmarried females it would be only just to Inquire as to how many of these taxable bachelors have been ; ilted, and the doors of the "old maids' lome" should be shut with a resoundng slan in the face of all those unwedded spinsters who have at any time n their career blasted the hopes of sorne fond admirer with a chilling "no." A supplementary tax might indeed be evled upon euch old maids as should be discovered to have promlsed once upon a time "to be a siüter" to any roung man.
