New York, June 18. - Amld the boomIng of cannon from two of Uncle Sam's warshlps, the screeching of whistles from rlver craft, and the cheers of thousands of spectators a flotilla of nearly 200 vessels entered the Harlem snip canal and a new waterway was thrown open to commerce at noon today. It was a great day for Upper New York. The joinlng of the waters of the Hudson and East rlvers was celebrated as no similar cvent has been celebrated slnce the Erie canal was opened In 1825. The weather was perfect. There were crowds of people on the bridges that cross the canal and at all polnts commandlng a view of the unlque marine display. In addition there was a land display which had many interesting features.
