In Los Angeles, ín a jewelry store, a three-horaepower motor is used in the cutting of precious stones. The machine worke by the motor is described as a new invention, and said to be the only one of its kind in the country. In the old method of cutting the stone w:is centered on the end of a stick or piece of brass held by the end on the grinding lap. In the electrically drlven I machine the stone is held by a quadrant, which ia adjusted by a set screw to its required position on the lap. As many as sixty stones can, it is stated, he cut at one time, and the method of wljustment is so accurate that in no case would there be the slightest possibility of overgrinding, even if an atti'n.lant were to leave the machine and i lnok after other duties. This enables ; the cutting to be done with certainty i and minuteness. The quadrants are all ir.dexed to cut any style of stone.
