IIow rp.uch the possession of happt ness depends upon the point oí view we ehoose to take in seeing things! She who determines to look upon the bright Side of afïairs will generally find that some brtghtness is visible; she who .sants to point out to herself and others that discouragements abound, can. as a rule, succeed, to her own satisfacticn [n the gloomy pursuit. There is such a thing as curbing one's natural tendeney to depression and in wholesome fashion casting lamentable melanclioly out of diors. And one means to this end is mentally and spiritually to outgrow the necessity of being happy. The ess one thinks of the deprivations and ack of those conditions which are coramonly supposed to be requisites of happinesü, and the less one cultivates a Bpirit of restless pursuit of happiníss - a spirit which by ita very lightness and delicacy eludes a harsh grasp - the more ikely is happiness to come all unsought, particularly if one is more anxious about securing conditions of 'ïapplpess tor others than for oneself.
