Havana: The most serious news of Spanish disasters received since the outbreak of the rebellion is that the garrisons of tvvo towns - El Mulatato aud San Gerónimo - have surrendered and have been burned by Máximo Gómez. Firing was constantly heard about Puerto Principe and extraordinary preeautions were taken to protect that tovvn. Owing torestrictionsupon transmission of news only the most meagre details of the disasters to the Spanish arms are obtamable. It is rumored that Antonio Maceo has succeeded in making his way from Santiago de Cuba into the jrovince of Puerto Principe at the head of a large body of insurgents and it may be his intention to join his forces with those of Gómez and make a combined attack upon Puerto Principe. Havana: Details reached here later of a desperate fight between a portion of the insurgent forcé under Gómez, in the provineeof Puerto Principe, and 70 of the auxilliary troops of the SpanUh governmènt knoivu as guerillas. ïhe latter were surprised by the vanguard of Gómez' forcé and nearly all were slaughtered. Fifty rebels were killed. lNewa received from Cuba viaTampa, Fia., says: Máximo Goraez surprised a garrison of l,S00 Spaniards at Alta Gracia and had a severe battle with them. He cut their ranks all to pieces and routed the enemy with heavy losses. After lie had taken the town he burned it.
