It was night; the stars were coverd by a cloud of mist, the vivid lightninga ñashed and shook their flery darts upon the earth, the deep-toned thunder rolled along the clouded sky, the elementa were in wild commoüon, the storm spirit howled in the air, the winds whistled Sie hailstones feil like cannon-balls thé huge billows of the ocean dashed upon :he rock-bound shores, and torrents eaped from the moi-ntain tops when tha muraerer sprang fiom his sleepless be.i svith veng-eance oi. his brow, murder in his heart, and the feil instrument of aestruction in his hand. The storm in?reased, the lightning flashed wlth brlg-hter glare, the thunder growled with ieeper energy, the winds whistled with X wilder fury- the confusión of the hcur vas congenial to his soul and the stormy passlons whlch raged in his bosom. H cllnehed his weapon with a sterner írasp. A demoniac smile gathered on 'als lips, he grated his teeth, raised his trm, sprang with a yell of triumph upoa his victim and killed- a mouse!
