A strong-minded-looking young woman and a resigned-looking' man called at the city hall, New York, the other day, and asked to see the mayor, i waSt to get married," gfce announced. A moment later they stood before Ma'pr Strong. The woman asked for Ui book containing the marriage cevemony and scanned it over until she carne to the passage "Love, honor and obey." The bridegroom tugged at her dress and said: "Never mind, Pauline, now. You needn't do it anyhow when we are married." The ï;Hde ignored him, and said: 'fr. Mayor, I wish you would leave the word obey out when you marry us." "Well, well," said his honor, "is this the new woman?" "No, str; I'm not the new woman, bilt I believe in equality. That word 'obey' is a relie of barbarism. It comes from the time when womea were in bondage." The Mayor then left the word out. The pair gave their names as Charles Sossinger and Pauline E. Becker, of Philadelphia.
