Mr. Edmund Clarence Stedman coined he phrase "Four Hundred," as applied 0 the aristocracy oí New York City, in 1 satirical poem ealled "The Prince's 3all,"relating to the Prince oL Wales' Msit to New York. The poem is dividid into the three parts, one of which is malled "The Council of the Four HunIred," and refers to the committee con■.isting of just that number, which had he arrangements for the ball and super in hand. Here are Mr.Stedman's i nes: 'For the honor and commerce of the city, Twas plain to ;ee there must be a committee! ío men of means and might were chosen, -core by score, and dozen by dozen, n all four hundred ñames.'
