General Dumont, of the United States iteamboat inspection service has recrds to show that during the last fiscal cear the number of lives lost on steam essels approximateW was 368. This xas an increase over the average of .he preceding 18 years of 128. The ;reat increase was caused by the large "as of llfe by the foundering of the steamship Colima recently off the Paific coast. The average for the last l9 years is 247. The highest previous innual loss was 5S6, in 1874; the lowest v?s 133. in 1886.
