The report of the board of army engineers, appointed by the secretary of war to examine and report upon the effect the Chicago drainage canal would have upon the waters of Lake Michigan, has been received at the war department. The board finds that the canal probably would reduce the average level of Lake Michigan about six biches and probably Lake Huron the same. This lovver level no doiibt would be objectionable to the shipping interests, and the Lake Arriera' association is making every eiïort to prevent the building of the canal, and has secured the co-operation of the Canadian engineers and Canadian suipping interests in opposing any steps that would result in lowering the lake levéis. Of course. Lake Michigan is wholly in the United States, but t is claimed that Lake Huron would be governed by the level of Lake Michigan, and that it is a border lake. In dddition, it is urged ihat the lowering of the water in both Lakes Michigan md Huron may, on account oí the reduction outHow, have a similar effect on Lakes Erie and Ontario.
