-ïf - Alone in China is the striking title of a story by Julián Ralph which will bo a feature of Harper's Magazine for October. Th is is the flrst of a series of six Chinese tales by Mr. Ralph, with illustrations by C. D. Weldon, the outcome of travels in the East, which both writer and illustrator undertook at the instance of the publishers of Harper's. As no other country in the world at the present time so stimulates yet baffles curiosity, the light that Mr. Ralph (a keen and trustworthy observer) is to cast upon China will enhance the value of thisseries. To the same number a timely paper on The Future in Relation to American Naval Power will be contributed by Captain A. T. Mahan, U. S. N., who avocates astrong navy as a protnoterof peace and of American interests, and assails the dogma that the national defence should be the sole purpose of battle-ships.- Harper & Bros. N. Y. C'ty. Among graphic methods of illustratng Snnday-school leason, the sand map is now used in many progressive schools. Miss Juliet E. Diraock has become widely known as an expert in the use of this form of lesson illustration. She has written an article, soon to appear in The Sunday School Times, in which she decribes the making of a sand-map and its varied uses. Miss Dimock tells not merely how she makes and uses her own sand-tnaps, but how other teachers may prepare and u-e theirs. - Sunday School Times, 1031 Walnut-st. Philadelphia, Pa.
