The first annual eon vontion of the Deep Waterways association was held at Cleveland vvith a larg-e numbe; of representative men in attendance. i There vvei-e among the delegates men prominent in the scientifie, educational, commercial, financial and industrial world, organized to aid the commerce of the great lakes by opening a deep water vray to the sea. There were present at the opening1 genrfon about ;J00 delegates and 300 visitors. (en. E. C. O'Hrien, president of the New York Doek commission, presided as temporary chairman. Tlie address of the international president, O. A. Howland, of Toronto. was followed by a number of interesting papers bearing upon the subject, by members frora the various states interested and from all parts of Canada. The important subject of lake levéis roceived considerable attention, and the Chicago drainage canal was regarded by many as a menace to lake commerce. The nominating committee grave Ohio and Michigan additional representación on the executive comm.ittee by Eyersoo Ritchie. of Cleveland, and llon. Don. M. DickinNin. of Detroit as members. Various routes and plans for a 9eep water fhannel from the lakes to the Atlantic were disenssed, but noaction was taken to indorse any of thein, as it was the general sentiment that a thorough investigation should first be made by competent civil engineers, and the resolutions adopted urged prompt and thorough investigations by commis.sioners both the United .States and Canada.
