A threatened riot at Ishkoota mines, Birming-ham. O., was quelled by Perry Watkins, the mine boas, wlio killed two men and mortally wouuded the third. VVatkina was assaulted by LoƔis Smith, .Ir.. Louis Smith 8r., and Columbus Madden with missiles. When thoy had Watkins down, and thoug-ht him to be knocked senseless, he emptied hi.s revolver, killing1 Smith, .Ir., and Madden, and mortally woundin(f Smith, Sr. The other disaffected miners tlien threatened Watkins, when they w-ere qnelled by hia courageous stand. The ('creat Northern railway has a strike of i: emploj es, members of the American Union, for hig-her wages. The strike bas beffun quietly, as did the great strike 18 moiiths ago, bnt it is Biowly spreading and it is predicted that before Thanksgiving the road wili be tied up. Hot. 1 was the limit of the time in which tlie eities of the fourth-ciuss, those havinr less thnn 10,000 popuiation, could vote upon the rejection of the "blankef charter paased by the state lejfislature. Over 50 eities come under this law and onlv six rejeoteri it. The law roes into effect Jan. 1.
