He gave his name as Gcorge W. Wüson. He said that he was well' known at the bar. He wears his hflir long, his face smooth shaven, and a kindly light beamed in his eyes as he tapped becietary Hedges on the shoulder familiarly. "I've broughi that one million dollars," said the man, as he fumbled in his pockets. Before Secretary Hedges could mako ?.!!} inquiry, t!ie visitor patted him again playfully, and whispered in his ear: "I've had the mayor made a duke." "A w'.iat?" asked the secretar?. "Shall I teil him myself? Better break the news gently. Teil him that the million will help him keep up appearances," said the man. He wrote the following: "My Dear Mr. Mayor: I have succeeded in having the queen appoint you a duke." The mayor failing to rush out and embrace him, he sent the following note: "If I am not seen. I will withdraw it." Even this threat failed to bring an answer and Wilson went away angry.
