It was not later taan six o'clock last Tuesday evening whenjpeople beganto gather on the walk in front of The Register ofnee to learn the electiou returns, and by half past se ven the crowd had becomc so dense as to make the walk almost impassible. Mrs. Bailey had kindly opened her parlors on the second floor to ladies and a large nuniber we re there to learn the results and to see the demonstration which was eertain toaccompany the announce ments. In front of the office in the center of the street a largo screen had been erected and connection had been mudo with the central tcleplioue office by a special wire. By aeven o'cloek returns began to como in and were both displayed on the screori by means of stereoptican and announced from the window by voice. As the roports becamo moro and more indicative of McKinley's election the Republican element went wild and raised cheers that could be heard a mile away. By one o'clock McKinley's election was assured and the crovvd gradually melted away. The only thing to hinder the complete success of the plan was the unexpected reflection of a distant electric light and a similar reflection from a candy store near the office. The proprietor of this concern had promised to darton his rooms as had the othcr merchantë on the street butfor some reason I unknown outside of his own fertile braln be did not doso. Beingreminded of his promise did not cause him any ble for he is evldently not the style of individual to troubJe' himself with such scntimentality as regard for promises. After getting into difliculty with the disgusted crowd and narrowly escaping a ganeral rush hc allo wed his lights to be put out. Theso lights made tho writing on the screen some what indistinct yet it did not cause any material .inconvenience and the crowd went away pleased and satisfied.
