A curioüs illustration is quoted by French newspapers of the methods of Prussians in the Province of Alsace and Lorraine, conquered from the French in the war of 1870-1871. A schoolmaater of Schatigheim, in AlBace, was seized with cramp while bathing, and would have been drowned had not one of nis colleaguês eprung into the water, and, at the risk of hls own life, saved the life of his comrade. In almoBt any other part of Europe the brave rescuer would have been re warded with a medal. In Alsace he was rewarded by a proscsution for bathing at a prohibited spot, condemned to pay a fine, and 2 marks 50 pfennig costa. This goes far to confirm the saying of aFrencn critic: "TJie Germane would rule Alsace and Lorraine better if they had a little less strength and a little more wit."
