Cleveland, O., Nov. 24.- Alniost the entire population living on Franklin avenue nill, composed largely of Slavs and Hungarians, with the exception ol the women and the babies turned out en masse last night in an effort td cut, stab and slash each other's heads. It was the bloodiest battle of the year around the river front and Columbus street districts. Fully forty men were engaged in the encounter. As far as could ce learned at least twenty persons were more or less seriously injured. The following are most seriously hurt: SYLVESTER CARTER, aged 60 years, 5 Franklin avenue; five cuts on back and six cuts in head; will probably die. WILLIAM MALLOY-, aged 24, living on Lorain street; cut in back and head repeatedly; seriously injured and may die. The fight started on the street between Jarues Carter and John Sprends over a trivial matter. Carter jostled Sprends in passing, which led to angry words and later to a fight. Other men soon came upon the scène, among whoru were friends of both of the combatants, and within a few minutes there was a throng of flghting and cursing men armed with knives and ciuba, which were used with blocxly effect. At the height of the fight there was a cry of pólice as a patrol wagon filled with bluecoats came dashing down the hill. Many of the particlpants in the battle fled, but a number, who were rendered unconscious or too badly injured to escape, were piled into the wagon and taken to the pólice station. Others were removed In ambulances to the hospital. It is said there is a broken head in nearly every house on the hill.
