Conan Doyle says he lias always observed that whether a woman's style of writing be plain or florid, it is alwaye clear anú comprehensible. The word style, which in France has always been synonymous with lucidity, has in England become more and more identified with obscurity, so that if you learn a new writer is a stylist you nearly always flnd a difflculty in understanding what he means.
