Conan Doyle says he lias always observed that whether a woman's style of writing be plain or florid, it is alwaye clear anú comprehensible. "No woman that I can recollect," he says, "has ever been tempted into the hersy oí preciosity. The word style, which in France has always been synonymous with lucidity, has in England become more and more identified with obscurity, so that if you learn a new writer is a stylist you nearly always flnd a difflculty in understanding what he means. The best style, like the bst glass, is that which is so clear that you do not observe it. Some oí our critlcs are fond of tallcing of purple patches, but purple patches were never a sign oí health. KBow, in this respect, I think th ladies have always been on the side of sanity and I do not thlnk that any one could have. a better model of prose romance than such writers as Olive Schreiner or M3ss Wilkins." -
