Within a year or two the French ehemist. Monstanf Moist&n, has succeeded in making minute diamonda by saturatiug melted iron with carboa and then cooling the iron unfler strong pressure. The carbon e.rystallizes into the fortn oL diainonda as the metal cools. This experiment has been rpeated many time. Recently it ooeurred to Monsieur Rossel that thcr must be diamonds in very hard steel, Which ia produced in a manner similar to the process of Monsieur Moissan. Accordingly he examined many speoi mens of such steel and discovered thal in fact it does contain microscopio dia monds, mere specks in size. but preentlng the characterlss forms and propertios of natural dia.nonds. At a recent meeting of the Acüdemy of Sciences in Paris oMnsiPur Rossel exhibited magnified photo.raphs of several of these minute gems taken from bit of steel.
