B. .Jiulson, publisher of the Lumbernian, ISO dtilegates, representing twenty-seven states, assembled here this mnrning when the national convention of lumber interests was called to order. A temporary organization was perfected with J. A. Freeman as chairman and J. E. Defebaugh and W. B. Tudson secretarles. Mr. Freeman made a vlgorous speech against the tariff of 1894 as discriniinating against lumber apd rging the conrention to take euch act ion as would secure just treatment to the lumber interests in the tariff blll to be enacted by the coming conxress. Secretary Defebaugli read many letters from lumbermen who could not be present, but who pledged thelr coopwaUon in any action the convention might take to secure a tarlïï on lumber. Akhough the present purpose is to secure a tariff on lumber, a permanent organization is being perfected to protect the general interests of lumbermen. .Mr. Defebraugh, in nis address, said that while the lumber trade was not au infant industry it needed protecI ion because it was a lementably weak ene- weak because of the vast extent 61 territory covered, of its variety of li inents and because of its very numbc-rg. An industry which in a year or two could doublé its product is partiiularly Hable to overproduction and HtUe able to organize itself to resist turti a tendency.
