Dr. V. C. Vaughan, in a paper read before the State Teachers' Association at Lansing Tueeday paid his compli. menta to modern college athletics in vigorous manner. He evidently does not favor thenr as cultivated at the present time. Here is what tóe correspondent of the Detroit Tribune says of his paper: Prof. Victor C. Vaughan, however, handled the subject without gloves Athletics, he saiü, are of little if any value. The immoral as weü as the moral side is developed. A dozen or so of students at the university, he said, are benefited, while several thousand lok on. Xhe life of the average dthlete is short, he said. As to foot ball, Prof. Vaughan deuounced it in red hot terms, as brutal and said it ought to be discontinued. But onetifth of the U. of M. students go to the gym.' according to him. Prof. Vaughan advocated a physical examïnation of each student, when he enters a college to ascertain his weak points so as to develop them. He was greeted by hearty applause. A resolution was thenadopted calling for the appointment of a faculty committee of one from each college in the state to regúlate athletics and co-operate in ihe formulation of rules to govern intercollesriate contests. The Womei) 's Auxiliary will be in attendance at the Y. M. C. A. rooms from 3 to 10 ocloek P. m. on New Year's day. In the afternoon Master Freddy Daly will sing and a Mandolin Trio will play frotn 4 to 5 o'clock. In the evening beginning at 7 :4ö a more extended program will be rendered. It will consist tofanumberof vocal and instrumental solos ánd a debate. The ladies will serve refreshments. lts all free. Everybody invited. Come and bring your triends. The meeting of the colored Republicans of the county, held last Saturday at the court house, was a deeidedly lively one. It was thought that the Ypsilantidelogation would support Mr. M. W. Guy, but when the time carne to ballot, it was found that they had a candidato of their own, a Mr. Frank Johnson, who iinally received the endorsëment of the convention, ana will roceive a clerkship at Lansi-ng this winter K one is given to the colored people of this county as is quite probable. At the inspection of the Light Infantry by Col. J. E. Tyrrel the Jollowing members of the company were presented with medals for regular attendance at drill: Silver medal forona year, without a miss, W. F. Armstrong, Wm. C. Cooper, rYed Huntoon, Karl Kern, Leo Gruner, Victor Kauffmau ; and Geoi-ge Kyer; bronze medal for six moaths without a miss, Jacob Gwinner, George Fischer, Rembert Jones, Arthur Jones. Ralph Miller, Gilbert Perrino, ; Edward O. Schairer, Joseph Sea bolt, rthurC. Warren and Bruce Mouroe.
