Chicago, Dec. 1", There was ajëling of confldence la banking clrcle this mornlng. Thts feellng was not conflned alone to the banks, but extended to the mercantile houses. The utmost coniidence was expressed that with the suspension of the National Bank of Illinois, Dreyer & Co., the Roseland instltution and Wasmansdorf &, Heinemann the suspensions had ceased and nothing more reraalned to be done than to straighten out the tangled affairs of those institutions. Dlrectors of the insolvent Xatlonal Bank of Illinois are indignantly denylng the juatice of Comptroller Eckel's crlticism of their alleged carelessness In allowing the enormous loans to the Calumet Electric Railway company to be made, and then permitting an increase of the loan after they had received warning to watch it. Government Will Investígate. Washington, Dec. 2'.. - There is a suspicion here that söme person in authority in the management of the late National Bank of Illinois was interested in the Calumet Electric railroad, else, it is asserted, no such loan would ever have been made. The government has determined to go deeply tnto the "true inwardness" of the loan and. if a oase can bo made, prosecutions will follow.
