Smlth -was nine times reprieved, and hls sentence flnally commuted to Ufe imprisonment. Onco he was led out onto the scafïold. the officials withhoJding the reprieve untll the last minute in the belief that he would confess. He always asserted his Innocence, and swbsequent developments have shown that he did not raurder Skidmoro.
