Prof. von Schroen's discovery that rocks live like plants and animáis, or even human beings, ha induced another savant to figure out when the Alps, or at least a part oí them, are to be obliterated. These are the interesting calculations: The Swiss river Aare. which rises in the upper Bernese plateau and traversas 170 mile3 of rocky country, annually camee 135,000 cubic metres of rocka torn from their native environment into the lake of Brienz.whose bed s constantly in consequence. This lake, which has now a length of nearly nine miles, and is about three miles broad, formerly reacued up to Meiringen, thirty miles from Berne. It took the Aare from fourteen to fifteen thousaud years to push the lake from its original bed luto that now occupied, says our ■avant, and continúes: "Thlrty-íive or forty thousand yeare will pass betore the present lako is flllod up with rocks whk-h UU Aare earrles into it." The Ave,. i t is declared, tears from each square kilometer of rocks it traverses 250 cuijic metres per annum, thui lowertng the Alps by one metre every 3,333 years. 1 he head of the Aare, coming from a ! ght of 2,2fiO metres, the Aare Rlaziera will be razel in 7,532, 5S0 years, and the last rock of the proud Alpe wlll be kilit-.l off and ground to Baad in 16.000,000 years.
