The state teachers' instituto for Washtenaw county will be held at Ypsilanti, beginning at 10 o'elock a. in., on Monday, August 9, and closing i at 4 p. ra. Friday, August 13. Courses I of study will be conducted along the following lines: Arithmetic - (l)Mcntal arithmetic drill. (2) C'ancellation as applied to analysis, proportion, and percenta?e (including bank discount). (3) Business forms. Algebra- (1) Analysis of definitions and discussion of signs. (2) Factoring. (3) Affected quadratics. Geometry- (1) Definitions. (2) Construction of problems, with demonstration of the same. Botany - Elementary instruction. Civil Govarnrnent- (1) Similarity of Government of county, state and nation. (2) Discussion of last special session of congress. Ilistory- (1) Frogrcss during the last thirty years in Bcience, invention, iodustry and education. (2) Finance. (3) Important current events. Geography- (1) Lessons on relief forms and tho causes that produced them. (2) Study of the forces that are everywhere at work modifying the earth's surface. (3) Practical illustration of how to correlata geography and history, by topicaj lessons about the eountries now attracting universal attontion. (Continued on paffe four.) TEACHERS' NSTITUTE. (:i) Analysis of sentences selected from the Httle classic used for literary work, or of ditlicult sentences handed in. Literatura- Any one of the follovvinjf may be used tor this work, as tlie instructor may select: "Irving's Westminister Abbey," No. 93 of the Maynard & Merrill Classics; Lowell's "Vision of Sir Launfal," iS'o. 30 of the LJoughton& Mifllin Riverside Serie; "Merchant of Venice," American Book Co. 's Eclectic English Classics. Orthography- (1) Word Analysis, using the little classic selected for litei-ary work. (2) Pronunciation contest.(either written or oral) makin? the list from physiological terras (including the names of diseases) geographical terms. naraes of noted personages, and words that are generally mispronounced. Physiology- (l) School hygiëne. (2) Prevention of cornmunicable diseases- sec Health Office circulars. (3) Critical analysis of the process of tiuman growth and repair, with special reference to concise and accurate methods of ixpression. Pedagogy-(l) Child study. (2) Talks based on "Psychology and Physic Culture" by Halleck, the book adopted for the Reading Circle work for the coming year. Teachers should bring books for reference along the Unes of the topics 8u?gested, and even a week's instituto may be made very prolitahle with class work and lectures combined. The institute law allows teachers, w'uose schools are in session at the time appointcd for the county institüte held under the direction of the State Superintendent, to close their schools during the continnance of such institute, without forfeiting their wages, Tor as many half days as thcy are in attendance at the institute.
