The New York and Brooklyn ele vated railroads are to be operated by electricity as soon as a change can be raade. A trestle on the Zanesville & Ohio Eiver railroad, near Marietta, pave way as an excursión train was passing over and two cars plunged through and were wrecked. About 15 persons were seriously injured, a number being burned, but it seems a mtracle that 110 one was killed. Frank M. Reed, of Andersott, Ind., claims to have completed a system of gas generation f rom a crude oü burner which is eapable of producing 33 per more heat than from eoal, and would enable the largest warships to carry fuel enough fora trip around the world. He also has invented an absolutely bullet nnd shell proof storage tank. One nan at the valves could take the place of 30 stokers now neeessary on a great war vessel. Reed's representative is at present demonstrating these inventions before the authorities at Washington. The treasury department has decided that the new tariff bill went Into effect at midnight on the 23d, Instcad of the afternoon of the 24th, owing to the fact that the law does not allow the recogmtion of a fraction of a day. Tlie effect of this decisión cannot yet be estimated, but It is known that at least $400,000 will be saved to Uncle Sam by the advance on the enormons sales of beer and ciffarette stamps and in the customs receipts on large cargoes which arrived at New York and Philadelphia on the 24th after strenuous cfforts had been made to get thera in before the bill was signed.
