Authors have to listen to rnany "■ ious complimenta as well as to those which are wholly agreeably. Not long go an effusive young woman was seatd next to a man who had recently pubished his flrst book. which had reeived many favorable criticisms. A inner was in progress and at the first pportunity the young woman turned o her neighbor, saying: "Oh! I am so glad to see you. To think that I can really talk to an author! I think it is so wonderful that you should have written 'The Hawk s Nest.' What I mean," she went on, hastily correcting herself, "is that H la so wonderful to thlnk you could have written anything!" The author's face probably showed some signa of hia mental attitude in regard to thi3 statement, for the young woman once more attempted to make her feelings clear. "Of course, you understand," she said, with an uncertain smile and an anxious note in her voice, "that I mean it always seéms perfectly wonderful to me that anybody can write anything, no matter how poor lt is; uiai js, j" know, even lf it isn't very good; though of course in this case " Here she abandoned the field, and with crimson cheeks turned to answer an opportune questlon from the nelghbor on the other side, who, happily occupied her attention during the rest of the meal, and left the author free to ponder on tMs, nis latest compliment.
