The custodian of the old assembly Toom in Independence hall, Phlladelphia, where the portraits of many historie personages adorn the walls, has grown so tlred of answering queriea relative to the identity of a statue of Washington, in a corner of the room, that he has laboled it wlth a placard bearing the name. The placard is large enough to enable a near-sighted person to read the inscription a block away. Th custodian expeets to spend the balance of the warm weather in peace. The figure of Washington, which seems to have puzzled so many visitors, to the disgust of the custodian is one which has been extenslvely cop'ied in many prints. It was carved In wood by William Rush, a brother of Benjamin Rush, during Washington's second term, and it Is said that Washington much admired it. The contour and expression of the face resemble the Peale portraits. Nevertheless visitors have been in the hablt of mistaklng the figure for Thomas Jefferson, and even for William Penn.
