Two recent occurrences have greatly promoted human freedom in África. One is the emancipation of slaves In Zanzíbar, through the proclamatlon of the sultan, at the instance of the British government. The other ia the breaklng of the power of the Fulahs, a slave trading semi-Arab tribe in the western Soudan. Tbjte has been aceom pllshed by Slr George Ooidie, the British admlnistrator of the Royal Niger company, and is a dlreot rasult of the expedltions against Benin and Nnpe The Fulahs, through force and super stltlon, and galned ascendancy orer th Hausae, one of the most promUlng Af rlcan tribes, and the Britieh usd a forcé of these Hausas, well armed an organlzed, to inflict a crushing blow upon their tyrants. The territory hith erto con trolled by the Fulahs was m of the last strongpholds of slavery.
