Secietary of State Sharman is quoted as sayin-j that Spain was a bankrup. country at the end of its resources rad that it was bound to becorae a republie and that Italy and other European nations tvould soon follow in the same direction. Önator Miagan, of Alabama, a leadinff rccmber of the foreign affairs comoüttec of the senate and the cluunpion of Cuba in that body, predicts that the assassination may be tho forerunner oí a complete change of ment, a repubho tlie monarchy. On receipt of news of the assassination at Havana the city was thrown into a fevcr of excitement. It was generally feit that the event would have greatlnfluenceupon Cuban aflfairs. ïhe Cuban junta in New York expressed the feclin that Cánovas was more responsible for the mitrares in Cuba than was Weyler, and his killinR- seemed to be an act of retribution. At the same time the Cuban party had nothing whatevertodo w'ith the death of Cánovas and had had no knowledg-e that such an act wasevea contemplated by anarchists or any one else.
