A Cure For Smut
To treat seed wheat so as to cure it of smut, take half a bushei of seed in a wire basket or perforated vessel and immerse it inwater heated to a temperature of 110 degrees Pahr. Then immerse the seed for a few minutes in scaldiüg water at 132 to 133 degrees Fahr., but not in any case above 135 degrees. Keep the waters at an even temperature by adding hot water. The amount of soalding water should bs eight times as greatas the seed treated, and the thermometer sbould be consulted all the time the wheat Í3 in the scalding water. Spread the cleaned wheat out thinly on the floor or on a canvas to dry. Then finally place it in bags that have been boiled 15 minutes, or in new bags. Jt is best to treat wheat just before planting.
