There is a better tone to the demand f rom jobbers and the volume o business in wool, leather, clothing, hats. groceries and light hardware hasincreased. There is a better request for woolen'and cotton goods, Jewelry and rubber goads and for boots and shoes. Some wholeaaie merchants report the largest volume of August trade on record. Tnere has been an increased consumption of cotton by sbuthern milis. Manv iron and steel milis have orders enough to keep them busy until January 1. In the central-western states the bltuminous coal strike has had a further depressing effect on the general industrial situatlon. Here in the north gome commercial houses have had to work ovsrtlme to meet the demand for goods, and the warm weather has practically assured the corn erop. On the Pacific cqast wheat exports have been checked by inabiiitv to secure crews for vessels. Mercantile collectlons have greatly improved in some sections. Last week's general and unprecedented expansión of prices for staples is corulnued, wool. cotton and woolen fabrics, hldes, leather. white pine lumber, iron and steel, wire nails, wheat, corn, lard and suíar havine advanced. Failures in August were n iiuniber but 17 per cent less than In August Tsuil but Ín amount of liabi((tlea W.8 per cení smaller. The improvement ís well distributed, extending tó nearly every importanl branch of business, Whéat prices had a reaction, but later rose again with the revival of forcign buying. Western receipts are very large though not quite as large as a year ago, but Atlantic exports, flour included rose to 5,534,758 bu the past week against 2,165,453 last year.
