But the youngster came to grief ono day last week and only the kindly worda of the mother saved him from complete and unqualified disaster. The young feilow had been c.;utious about being around the house when the old man was there, particularly on Sunday, when, of all days, the old gentleman coL&idered that young men and women shculd medítate at home alone. Unhappily, this Suniay evening papa didn't go to chureh and as iiis dearly beloved daughter and the young man carne taward the homestead he vas readlng a paper. Tii lovers realized ihe dolk.1- y of their position, but both bolBterod up their faltering courage and approached the domicile. For want of anythmg better to say the young man observe.? that it would be a beautifu] day tomorrow. The old gettleman looked over his eyeglasses and Li3 paper and, apparently intendlng to eruah his young friend at one blow, he broka forth: "Nica day, eh? Well, I guess, young man, the Lord will take care of that without a:y help from you. Young men shculd be in church Sunday night instead of caliing on young ladies and speculating whether totnorrow will be a nice day or a bad one. That's what I think about it." All the youngster's ideas of pleasant days vanished and the sunset in the west was only a light flush compared with the deep rea on the oheeks of ihe girl. But mamma helped out just a üttle, while George was contriving a retreat that would not be utterly ignominious. "Yes, George," said mamma, "I think it will be a very nice day." "It's getting rather cloudy, though," remarked George, as he turned diseomñture into facet iousness for a moment and glanced from papa's face to the clear aky.
