Abüut 1800 persons were present at the opening of the S. L. A. Course last night and listened to Senator Mason's lecture on the "Evolution of a State." "Xo nation" he sa'd, "can justly extend her power to include a weaker state without the consent of the latter. The acquisiüon of territory by forco is robbery and its acquisition by arbitration is larceny. "Cuba and Hawaii should be free and live under their own flags. Some one says Cuba has no government and no state house but neither did Was'.iing with his barefoot followers. He macie America a nation. If Spain wins from Cuba the progress oí liberty will be turned back and depotism will .be strengthened." The lecture was good throughout. There was nothing in it of the dry political speech and the student body is well satisfied.
